Proverbs Ch 9

Fear without fear

Proverbs 9:10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning wisdom. And the knowledge the Holy One is understanding.”

"We fear so much because we fear God so little”

The fear of the Lord should be a highly regarded and sought after trait, one that we desire to develop in our lives. Whenever we hear the word "Fear", it can conjure up one of three

processes of thought. In the Old Testament, the word fear has a three-fold range of meaning:

  • It means dread, or terror to stand in awe the way you would if you truly admired someone,

  • to respect in regard to parents and others who are entitled to it.

The proper kind of fear is that which causes one to stand in awe, to revere and to respect.

Fear of the unfamiliar.

The first electric light was so dim that a candle was needed to see its socket.

One of the first steamboats took 32 hours to travel a distance of l50 miles.

Wilbur and Orville Wright’s first airplane flight lasted only l2 seconds.

And the first automobiles travelled 2 to 4 miles per hour and broke down often.

Carriages would pass them with their passengers shouting' "Get a horse!"

One response that fear permeates is ridicule. We can become very concerned with what we are unfamiliar with.

But as we see from those few new beginnings of things once thought impossible, they ultimately transformed our way of life.

With a proper understanding of the fear of the Lord, we are more likely to appreciate the value of the fear of Lord as revealed in Proverbs.

Appreciating the fear of the Lord

If we truly love, honour and respect the Lord we will learn to love what He loves and to hate what He hates.

We will hate evil. We will be prompted to get as far away from it as we can.

Other benefits of truly loving, honouring, and respecting the Lord is that we will prolong our life, and we will have strong confidence and a fountain of life.

We will have a satisfying life, spared from much evil. We will enjoy riches, honour, and life! -

Sounds wonderful, doesn't it?

An atheist said, "lf there is a God, may he prove himself by striking me dead right now." Nothing happened "You see, there is not God" Another responded, "You've only proved that He is a gracious God"
